((I figured I might as well get this topic rolling, Cat. So whenever you FINALLY come back on, come and reply! xD))

It was late. Now that the summer was practically over, the sun was setting sooner and it was getting darker quicker. Dark as it was, the Arena was lit up with the slightly eerie light of the Greek fire torches as Daquiri sharpened Blood Beauty for the umpteenth time. Satisfied with the edges of the blade, she set the honing rod back down and examined her dagger for a moment. Its bronze blade gleamed in the greenish light and she ran a thumb over the indentations on the hilt like she had been ever since they’d been magically zapped there. It was weird, knowing that her—shudder—mother had put the words there. Almost like it was some kind of letter she’d received after a lifetime of thinking she was dead.

Shaking her head, Daquiri whipped the dagger across the room into a wooden dummy without a second thought. Mother or not, Aphrodite wasn’t her idea of a person—or goddess, whatever—that she’d want to get to know better. It had taken the goddess more than a week to claim her as her own daughter and it had been several weeks since then—and Daquiri hadn’t heard a peep from her. Not to say that she wanted to talk to her mother, but, seriously? She didn’t even have the decency to poof down in a sprinkle of magic dust so Daquiri could chew her out and ignore her for the rest of her life? Talk about rude parental negligence.

Striding across the dirt floor of the Arena, the red-head tugged Blood Beauty out of the dummy with one jerk before sending it in a slashing path diagonally across the chest. A deep scar rutted through the wood; not deep enough to cut anything in half, but it sure would’ve been one h*** of a death blow. Or at the least, it would’ve created a nice pool of blood.

The Love Goddess still on her mind, Daquiri continued to attack the dummy through a series of stabs and slashes, not stopping for a moment to even dab away the delicate sheen of perspiration forming on her forehead. Now that she was at a camp that encouraged hacking away at inanimate objects with sharp sticks, she might as well use it to her advantage and burn off some steam.

Zeus knew a journal entry wasn’t going to cut it.

The indigo night chased the sun to the horizon, throwing pale gold and amber colors across the clouds. Cat watched it as she trudged along the path to the arena, her bow, Heliakos, in hand. She used to love being out in the evening air, watching the sunset. That pastime's appeal had soured a little when she learned that the sun was a chariot being driven by none other than her dear, missing-in-action father. But it was still an admittedly a nice view.

She wasn't supposed to be out, she knew. It was late. The harpies were free to devour her. She would've gone to the archery range, but that was a bit more open. In the arena she didn't have to worry as much about them spying her from afar.

She walked silently into the arena, hearing someone else fighting inside. Her eyebrows went up in surprise as she realized it was none other than Daquiri, stabbing and slashing away at one of the straw dummies with a ferocity she had already become acquainted with in their previous encounters. However, this time it seemed a hundred times stronger. If Cat had thought she had looked murderous before...
In any case, she decided it would be best not to disturb her. She stepped back, and Heliakos hit the door frame, clattering to the ground loudly. Oops.

Daquiri whipped around at the sudden sound of a noise, her throwing arm raised and ready to send her dagger spinning off into a harpy's wing. Honestly, those bird ladies had nothing on her when she was in a bad mood. However, the red-head wasn't met with any fluttering wings or vicious talons. In fact, she couldn't see anything but a shadow in the entrance to the Arena.

Tapping the flat of her blade against her palm, Daquiri raised an eyebrow at the figure. If they were trying to be stealthy, they'd failed miserably. And depending on who it was, she might just have to chew them out for it.

  "Who's there?" she called.

Nice going, Cat, she grumbled to herself. She reached down and grabbed Heliakos, then stood up straight to face the other girl, whose arm was poised and ready to throw her dagger. In the dim silvery light provided, she could see her bring her arm down and tap the knife's blade with her palm.
  "Who's there?" Daquiri asked.
Cat realized that she must only be able to see her outline in the moonlight. And judging from her tone, she was probably only asking for her identity to decide whether she should skewer her or not.
Perhaps she'd be lucky, and the temperamental red-head would decide she wasn't shish-ka-bob-worthy. "Cat," she called back, her voice echoing a bit.

Daquiri recognized Cat's voice along with the name she called out. "Ah," she said shortly. She spotted the silhouette of a bow in Cat's hand--the thing she had so clumsily dropped. It was obvious she was here to practice as well. Although, she wondered why the girl was coming here after curfew. Sure, she was here, but when had Daquiri ever followed the rules? Cat, on the other hand... well, the red-head hadn't really thought of her as the rebel type.

Dabbing at her forehead with a towel, Daquiri walked over to one of the Arena benches to retrieve her water bottle. "What are you doing here?" she asked the brunette, for lack of anything better to say. And maybe a little bit because she was curious about Cat's sense of integrity now.

Well, she didn't throw the knife. Cat decided to count that as a win.
She shrugged, a little sheepish, at Daquiri's question. "I find that evening's still a nice time to practice, even if the light's fading."
Feeling as if there was not much else to say, she pulled an arrow from her quiver, aimed at a straw dummy across the arena, and let go. The arrow whistled through the air and struck its chin. Frustrated, she gritted her teeth. She immediately whipped out another and, aiming a little more carefully this time, shot again. The arrow caught the dummy right in the middle of its straw neck. Cat lowered her bow, triumphant, and glanced at Daquiri again.
She had been faced with the red-headed demigod's fiery-temper firsthand, and it had been quite intimidating, to say the least. And even that hadn't been a true display of the wrath she could bring down. But oddly enough, now that her energy was being channeled into ripping apart a straw dummy with her knife rather than chewing people out at the slightest provocation, Cat could... actually find a bit of respect for it.
She raised her bow, took another arrow, and prepared for another shot.

Daquiri watched on with a critical eye as Cat took some shots at a straw dummy across the arena. She almost snorted when the girl missed any critical spot altogether on it, but considering she herself had never done archery (unless making an arrow disappear counted), she kept silent and watched a moment more when Cat drew another arrow. The girl focused more this time, and when she let loose the arrow, it went flying straight into the dummy's neck. The red-head raised a thin eyebrow, mildly impressed. But she knew there was always room for improvement.

Setting down her water bottle, Daquiri set her sights on the same dummy, made sure her hand was angled and wrist wasn't bent, then in one smooth motion sent Blood Beauty flipping across the Arena in a hammer throw before Cat could shoot her next arrow. The blade flashed through the air and then came to an abrupt stop, stuck deep into the dummy's chest right where its heart would have been. The 14-year-old gave Cat a side-long look. "If you're going to shoot, always go for the heart."

Cat lowered her bow when the girl's dagger struck the dummy right in the heart. She raised an eyebrow. Well. That was a surprisingly good throw. Not that she was going to admit to being impressed in any way, shape or form. Not yet.
"If you're going to shoot, always go for the heart," Daquiri told her, giving her a side-long look.

As she searched for something to counter with, she raised her arms, aimed, and let loose her next arrow. It sailed across the arena, and, skimming the blade lodged in the straw chest, stuck itself in right next to it.
"True," she allowed. "But sometimes the heart isn't an available target," she pointed out, nodding to a dummy in the corner that someone had sloppily equipped with a silver breastplate and helmet.
As Cat strung an arrow, her mind locked into autodrive. She dropped into a crouch and sent a quick arrow flying up into the armpit chink. As she rose, she whirled around, preparing her next shot, bow turned horizontally like a crossbow. She planted her foot, and two arrows went flying: each ending up in an eyehole of the dummy's helmet, sticking out like sorely misplaced antennae.
The daughter of Apollo stood there, silent, adrenaline rush gone and leaving her with nothing but faint surprise. She forced it down quickly and looked at Daquiri, putting on the same side-long look the other girl had given her earlier. "Sometimes you have to improvise."

For several moments, Daquiri was dangerously silent. Cat wasn't exactly showing her up, but she wasn't really trembling in fear and awe, either. And the red-head was used to people being intimidated by her. In fact, it was kind of her goal in life to do so. Scare people and they would stay away; simple as that.

But at this girl’s little bow and arrow show and smart-a** comebacks, Daquiri couldn’t help it. She cracked a half-smile and snorted. “Not bad, kid,” she said, walking over to one of the dummies to tug her dagger out. “Did your daddy give you those magic shooting powers?” Daquiri was being sincere when she said Cat was a good shooter, but honestly—the girls had been at camp an even shorter time than she had. Unless she’d always been attracted to archery and had practiced it her entire life, there was no way the girl could be that good at just from the training she’d had at camp for the last month.

"Did your daddy give you those magic shooting powers?"
Cat stiffened, the short feeling of satisfaction from getting as close to a compliment as she assumed anyone could get from the red-head dissipating in less than a second, replaced by a stony silence of her own. That thought had been lingering in the back of her mind a few moments ago, but... Her hand tightened on Heliakos.
"No," she replied flatly, not letting her doubts show in her voice. "I've always had good aim, and a good arm. Apollo's not the god of discus and javelin as well, now is he?" She shoved her hands into her pockets. "And I've used slingshots before," she grumbled, half to herself, though she wasn't sure if Daquiri may have picked it up from the echo around the otherwise-silent arena. "Close enough."

Daquiri raised an eyebrow. "Yeah? Prove it." Walking over to the row of racks holding various training weapons, the red-head selected a few: a javelin, a throwing knife, and, yes, a sling shot and pouch of celestial bronze stones. Sheathing her own weapon, Daquiri sauntered over to Cat. Sticking the javelin point-down into the dirt floor, she hung the sling shot onto it and tucked the knife into the pouch. Then she stuck a hand on her hip and held out the other one. "Give it," she challenged, narrowing her eyes, "and show me."

Cat raised an eyebrow and smirked upon seeing the slingshot. "No way,” she said to herself in amusement. And when Daquiri challenged her, well, she sure as heck wasn’t going to back down.
She reached for the handle of the slingshot, but then decided to pick up the throwing knife first, as it was in the way of the pouch of stones. She tossed it up a little, getting a feel for the weight. The blade seemed heavier than the hilt, she noted. She'd never used throwing knives before... Well, no better time to start learning.
She angled her hand the way she had noticed Daquiri holding her dagger earlier, hoping she was doing it properly. Taking another moment of pause to judge the angle and speed she'd have to throw at, as well as the distance, she eyed her target: a dummy's heart. Her teeth clenched as she drew her arm back slightly and let out a slow breath.... Then she flung the weapon, wrist flicking like she was skipping stones.
The knife whipped through the air... and the hilt thudded sideways into an expressionless straw face before clattering to the ground with a disappointing thud.
Cat scowled and muttered an angry word to herself before picking up the slingshot, determined to get it right this time. And this, she actually knew how to do, from an otherwise boring summer with some neighborhood kids who had an extra slingshot and a lot of spare time. She lifted a stone from the pouch, tossed it into the air, and put it in the leather pad. She gave it a light, experimental tug. The rubber was rather taut, so she tugged even harder, stretching it as far back she dared. She stared down the dummy as she steadied her arms... and released.
This time, the projectile connected with its target, burying itself into the dummy's chest, right around where the heart would've been. She grinned, a determined look set on her face, then shot another, which lodged itself in the heart of the one beside it. And a third to the one on the other side of that.

Giving the other girl a quick glance, she picked up the last weapon – the javelin. It was notably a bit heavier than the ones she had used back in school, when she was on the track-and-field team for javelin, but she could still manage it quite well. She surveyed the distance between her and a randomly chosen victim, recalling her average throwing distance and moving back to accommodate that and the space needed for the run. She lifted the javelin above her shoulder, remembering to keep her elbow pointed forward and the javelin tip lowered a bit. She began to move forward, going through the rest of the motions, her mind skimming through it all like she had just done it yesterday. And here came the last two steps... Cat knew just what to do. Time seemed to slow down as she twisting her body so her left hip was pointing towards the target. She pulled back the javelin, then, planting her left foot and pushing off of her right foot, she turned to face the target full on again, and brought her arm up and forward. Wait... and... now! She released the javelin, and followed through before looking up to watch.
The javelin sailed through the air for a few more seconds, and finally speared her victim in the chest, ripping through and then leaving the arena in silence.

Cat turned to Daquiri, green eyes fiery. “There. Is that good enough for you? And if you can find a discus, I’ll throw it all the way to Olympus.”

[Holy fudge, I'm done the post! And hey, that last line rhymes.]
