A Not so Bright Idea for a Child of Apollo (Fred)

'Stay where you are. Don't try to come home. Harold had told him.
'So long as you're at the Camp you will be safe' Kristina had promised him.
'You need to be trained Dominic. If you go outside without proper training then who knows what may happen to you.' Chiron had warned him.
Three of the wisest people Dominic knew had told him how bad an idea it was to leave camp without taking precautions. He'd heard the stories that people told around the camp fire. The stories about Giants gobbling up half-bloods when they dropped their guard and Gorgons turning them to stone when they were careless. They terrified him.
But he had also heard the other stories. The stories of people surviving. Brave young men cleaving through lines of demons. Fearless women defeating terrifying witches and creatures that woul make grown soldiers cry for their mother.
He liked those stories. Those stories made him believe that what he was about to do was a good idea.
As he sat on the beach he looked over the possessions he had stuffed into a bag; a spare pair of clothes, some rations, bandages and a few bits and pieces that he doubted would be of any use. It wasn't much, but it was all he could take without anyone noticing what he was up to.
A shiver went up his spine as he heard footsteps. He cursed in ancient greek and kicked the bag to one side before whipping out his guitar and strumming the strings. With any luck he could convince whoever it was that he was out after lights out because he had been too focused on practising.

" naw bad but dae yeh know any Biffy Clyro?" Fred joked " cane sleep tae?" she asked it would be good to vent her spleen to some one.

'No.' Dominic replied as he watched her approach. Fred, daughter of Enyo; the Goddess of destruction. The first time he had met her he had rudely stared at her missing eye, now he found himself staring again.
'I've got too much on my mind.' He said before standing up and turning to her, 'What are you doing up?'

" ah never sleep. well maw much any way." she said taping her head.
" i hear the voice of Enyo in ma heed. its a bit like having a psycho in ma heed. kill this smash that. and ma iPod broke so i cane drown her oot. besides ma cabin is a wreck literally."
she admitted.

'So your Mom is constantly talking to you?' Dominic asked, 'Geez that's rough. I mean I get annoyed when my stepdad keeps bugging me about cleaning my room every other day, but to have him in my head all the time would drive me nuts.' He said with a small chuckle before going stiff as he realised that what he just said may have been a little offensive.
'Gods damn it.' He cursed, 'Why can't I ever talk to you without saying something dumb like that?' He sighed angrily, 'Did I inherit my Dads ability to never shut up or something?' He asked before kicking the sand behind him, only to realise that he had just kicked his luggage and the contents had gone sprawling over the sand; including the map to Florida.

" i think that's her plan." Fred answered. "i don't like hurting people but.... god. the images she puts into ma heed. if you saw them..." she let it trail off. " so whit you daing up any hoo? oot for a night time stroll?" she joked

He was glad that she hadn't picked up on his frustration or noticed the luggage that lay sprawled out behind him, but now he couldn't help himself. He had to tell someone what he was doing.
'I'm breaking out of camp so I can visit my brother.' Dominic spoke, turning to his luggage and shoveling it back into his bag.

" ahh nice if yeh want ah um well up fur hurting something. and dint think i huvney seen yer stuff over there." she pointed to his luggage.









just to point out Fred hasn't got her bronze eye yet.

'Aren't you going to convince me not to go?' He asked, folding up the map and ramming it back into his pocket, 'Thats what everyone else would try to do anyway.'

" $@>?~ naw ahm a wane of chaos. hell a wee bit of danger is whit ah need ive only been here fer a week or two. besides ive got ma motor parked in a car park in the city." she announced.

It was then he realised what else Fred was implying.
'Wait. You want to come with me?' Dominic asked, staring at her strangely, trying to figure out her angle, 'Why? This could end up getting you killed.'

Fred roiled around the ground laughing.
" get me killed like i give a smeg if i get killed. its others i worry aboot." Fred looked deep into Dominic eyes " why are you doing this? and if you lie or put any one in danger i will kill you in ways you cant Imagen but i think about all the time?" fred smiled her hideous disfigured smile. she was being honest she would help Dominic but if he was endangering every one..

Dominic was quiet for a moment. The reason he was doing this had troubled him ever since he had found out the truth about being a son of Apollo. Something which made his insides feel cold whenever he thought about it.
'I have a younger brother. His names Clyde.' He said softly, 'He's twelve. Been there for him ever since my mom died years ago.' He sat on the sandy ground, a frown on his face, 'My mom told me that my dad, my real dad, was the father of both me and Clyde. She always insisted that and I never questioned it.'
'Until I came here.' He said, 'Before I came here me and my family were attacked by a Cyclops. It wanted to kill for because I was a demigod. It chased me half way across New York until I found this place.'
'Just me.' He said solemnly, 'It didn't go for Clyde. It just went for me.' He ran a hand through his golden hair before looking her in the eye. Her bronze and brown eyes stared back, but for once he didn't feel intimidated.
'I think my brother is adopted.' He said and felt dismay course through him, 'Thats why they went after me and not him. Because he's not a child of Apollo. He's no one.'

" cool had tae ask. i cane let someone tae get hurt on ma watch." she suddenly became pally and jocular.
"yed best ask if someone else wants tae come along" fred pointed out.

Dominic was a little taken back by her attitude. He had just told her that he believed his brother was adopted and she acted like he had just told der they were going for ice cream.
'You...are unbelivably strange.' He said before a grin boke out over his face, 'I can't ask anyone else to come. If anyone else comes then I can expect Chiron or some other dude to hawl me back to camp. Apparently I'm supposed to stay put.'

" cool nae problem let me go get ma jaket and ma sword then we kin go get ma motor. then we'r off." she said it was a nice night but she wanted her German combat jacket. "buy the way do you like rammstein?" she asked randomly.

Dominic's grin grew wider. This girl was crazy, but he liked her. He pulled his guitar into his hands again and began to strum at the strings, a loud rock beat shot out from the instrument; Ramnstein's Du Hast.
'If the radio breaks then you can depend on me to play.' He said with a big grin on his face before sliding his luggage and the guitar onto his shoulders.

" och its naw that its the only thing on ma play list except fur biffy clyro. i need it tae drown oot Enyo." she said tapping her head. then ran off to the cabin.

Dominic waited by the pine tree for Fred. He stood a distance away from it, hoping not to wake up the dragon that lay sleeping at the bottom of it. If he woke him up then he would probably end up alerting the entire camp.
As he waited he stared up at the sky above. It was a dark clear night with the stars fully in view and the moon full.
'Dad?' Dominic whispered, 'I know you and I don't talk. I'm pretty sure that you may even be asleep right now, but I need a favor. I'm about to get myself killed and I'd appreciate it if you could stop that happening somehow. I'm not asking for much. Just...something.'

Fred ran up as noiselessly as someone in combat boots carrying a six foot sword with bad depth perception could.
"wee awe set?" she asked. proudly displaying a T-shirt with "masturbation is not a crime" written on it.
her hair was in bunches showing off the puffy empty socket and the scars over the right side of her face.

Dominic turned to face her. He hoped she hadn't seen his prayer. It felt embarassing for someone to catch him asking his father for anything.

out of character Fred hasn't got her bronze eye yet. ive got to get Jake to make it for her.

"you praying tae Apollo?" she asked bluntly with all the tact of a tank." couldn't hurt could it?"

'Guess not.' He nodded grudgingly, 'I doubt he'll do anything. Mom always said he wasn't that dependable when it got dark.' He said before gesturing behind him, 'Shall we hit the road before anyone catches us?'

" aye. cane bee worse than ma maw kin he?" she said steeping out of the boundary of the camp.

'Guess not. I suppose if I did have my Dads voice in my head he'd just keep telling me I'm playing the wrong chord on my guitar.' Dominic replied, 'At least your Mom talks to you. I know that sounds a little nuts, but from what I can tell a lot of campers aren't on a reguar talking basis with them.'
He followed Fred across the barrier and immediately looked around for any sign of danger. He had half expected to immediately be lynched by a gang of Cyclops, but nothing happened. Everything was still quiet.
'Have you ever met your Mom? You know, in person, not just her voice?'
